Mini-Bio

Phillip B. Gibbons is a Principal Research Scientist at Intel Research Pittsburgh. He received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of California at Berkeley in 1989. He joined Intel Research in 2001 after 11 years at (AT&T and Lucent) Bell Laboratories. Gibbons is an Adjunct (Full) Professor in the Computer Science Departments at Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh.

Current Research Projects and Interests

• Sensor systems
  • IrisNet project: A core architecture and software infrastructure for a worldwide sensor web.

  • Dynamic Physical Rendering project: Programmable matter composed of myriad tiny robots.


• Parallel and distributed processing, focusing on chip multiprocessors (CMPs), models of computation, formal verification, fundamental algorithms, synchronization, scheduling, security, and testing. (see online papers)
  • Log-Based Architectures project: Hardware-supported logging for program monitoring and recovery on CMPs.
  • Shared Caching project: Thread schedulers and programming models for CMPs.
  • Reliable Email project: Improved anti-spam systems, defense against sybil attacks.


• Querying massive databases and data streams, focusing on approximate query answering, synopsis data structures, distributed data streams, and tuning databases to modern procesors. (see online papers)
