About Intel Labs Pittsburgh

Overview brochure describing our research in detail.

If you visit the Intel Labs Pittsburgh lab on the campus of Carnegie Mellon University, you may find a Ph.D. student in deep discussion with an Intel researcher. A seminar might be in session at one end of the lab while a project team at the other end gathers around a computer screen to test their latest software prototype. The atmosphere is collegial, the feeling is open and inviting. What you won't find are Intel researchers holed up in a corner of the lab, speaking in hushed tones, stopping when a student or faculty member walks by.

Intel Labs Pittsburgh is one of three University Lablets in Intel Labs, an innovative model of industry-university research pioneered by Intel to enhance and accelerate long-term research. Under the model, which stresses openness and collaboration, researchers flow freely between the labs, Intel and the university, conducting joint research projects. It's a win-win arrangement designed to generate breakthrough results.

Each lab in the network focuses on research that Intel considers important to advancing the vision of Essential Computing.

"When Intel set up this model, it seemed like a fairly radical and good idea. Now that I've experienced it more, I see that it's an outstanding idea. It completely changes the nature of how universities can collaborate with industry. The Pittsburgh lab has hired some top-quality researchers, and they participate in our environment, attend talks, and are available for discussions and so on. In many ways, for us Intel is like an extension of Carnegie Mellon."

-Randy Bryant, Dean of the School of Computer Science, Carnegie Mellon University

Since its opening in early 2002, Intel Labs Pittsburgh has grown into a thriving research organization. In a few short years, the open and collaborative research model under which the lab operates has proven its ability to deliver results.

Research Centers of Excellence

Intel Labs Pittsburgh is proud to boast two research Centers of Excellence: Cloud Computing Systems and Embedded Real-time Intelligent Systems. Each of these centers has a particular technical focus and a number of inter-related research projects exploring various aspects of that focus.

Cloud Computing Systems (CCS): The CCS team at Intel Labs Pittsburgh is investigating issues surrounding building and using system software for cloud computing. The projects of the CCS center span all layers of the cloud software stack-- from physical resource management tools to applications (hover over project links for additional details).

Embedded Real-time Intelligent Systems (ERIS): The ERIS center explores fundamental research issues needed for building intelligent systems that perform challenging tasks in unstructured, real-world environments. Our approaches focus on enabling reliable perception with noisy sensors, constructing robust plans given limited information about a dynamic world and controlling complex physical mechanisms while ensuring low latency and soft real-time performance. Efforts in ERIS include fundamental algorithmic and systems contributions, design of novel sensors and actuators, and application of our technology to areas ranging from agriculture and healthcare to next-generation retail and robotics.
